Library Director

The Dobbs Ferry Public Library Board of Trustees seeks a new director to lead Dobbs Ferry’s vibrant public library following the retirement of its well-respected director. The new director will be responsible for driving the Library’s growth as the cultural heart of the community while ensuring that it meets the Board of Trustees’ vision of the library as a conduit for the pursuit of learning, growth, and human connection, accessible to all.

 

The Library has seen tremendous growth in recent years. It enjoys village-wide support through its variety of programs and services, a popular Children’s Room, burgeoning Teen Space, and diverse collection. The new director will be expected to continue this growth through the curation of materials and programming that meet the needs of the community, the maintenance and reimagining of the library space to best serve the community, and the leadership of the library staff.

 

In addition to leading day to day operations, the director will be expected to collaborate with the Board of Trustees, Friends of the Dobbs Ferry Public Library, officials from the Village, community organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that the Dobbs Ferry Public Library is and continues to be a cornerstone of the community, welcoming to all.

 

The director should be knowledgeable in library trends, technology and its use in libraries, and be able to manage a facility and staff of 19 employees with an annual budget of $840,000. The director should be a proactive communicator, able to engage individuals, create partnerships, and advocate for the Library’s needs. The director should be energetic, with creative ideas for how to meet the library’s short and long-term goals, and the ability to meet those goals. Finally, the director will also be expected to implement the Strategic Plan, as approved by the Board of Trustees in 2019.

 

The minimum qualifications for the Library Director position include:

● A Master’s degree in Library Science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices

● A New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate

● Experience in public or academic library leadership, administration and management with a minimum of five years’ experience working in a library setting.

The DFPL is a municipal library within the Village of Dobbs Ferry, and this job is a Civil Service Library Director I position. Dobbs Ferry NY is a vibrant village of 11,000 located on the scenic Hudson River in Westchester County. The Hudson Metro-North Rail Line provides easy access into and out of New York City via a 30 minute ride, and the village is easily accessible from Rockland County, northern New Jersey, and points north.
