Librarian I - Children's
Somers Library is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and engaging librarian who is familiar with
children’s developmental and literacy needs. The ideal candidate is passionate about
implementing a variety of programs that foster literacy and lifelong learning for children from
birth to grade 5. Collaboration with local schools, Recreation Department, and more is essential.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
● Plan, promote and implement lesson plans using Information Literacy and NYS Learning
Standards which are based on the developmental stages of children from birth through
grade 5
● Empower patrons by helping them learn to read, getting the information they need to be
well-informed or helping them using reader’s advisory and reference services
● Develop and maintain a targeted and robust collection, as well as displays
● Impact our community through information services and programs to help youth and
their families
● Interact with children and their families
● Maintain liaison and collaborate with local schools to find additional ways to support
literacy and encourage use of the library and its offerings
● Support community by maintaining important relationships with local town departments
● Implement Summer Reading
● Supervise a Library Assistant
Qualifications:
● ALA Accredited Masters’ of Library Science required
● NYS Public Librarian Certification or ability to become certified
● Experience working with children and families
● Strong knowledge of children’s literature
● A positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor
● Strong computer and technology skills (experience Evergreen a bonus)
● Excellent phone, written and oral communication skills
● Keep informed of developments in professional organizations, meetings, webinars,
continuing education and professional reading materials

Our library is a dynamic, busy and engaging destination for our residents. Our mission is to
provide Somers residents of all ages with free informational, recreational and cultural resources
and programs in a welcoming atmosphere conducive to learning and enjoyment. Somers Library
provides and seeks to improve free public library service to all residents of the Town of Somers,
New York, and to residents of Westchester County communities with which the Somers Library
engages in cooperative services. Books and library services are provided for the interest,
information and enlightenment of all people of the communities served. To the extent possible,
materials and information will present a wide range of viewpoints on current and historical
issues.
Important: Placement in this position is subject to Westchester County Department of Human
Resources (Civil Service) approval as a Children’s Librarian I.

get on the appropriate list - Librarian I, Librarian I (Children’s Services), Librarian II, etc.

2. After you apply you will receive a letter saying you are eligible to take the "exam," which is
really just an evaluation by way of a detailed questionnaire about the applicant's education,
training and employment background. The higher the score the easier a permanent placement
is, so elaborate as much as possible about all librarian duties and experience, plus all the
conferences and training attended. 3. The scoring of the exam can take anywhere from 4-12
weeks. Any start date will depend on when the exam results are released and where you place
on the Civil Service list for the exam you took (Librarian I, Librarian I (Children’s Services),
Librarian II, etc.).
